Nursery Decor: Finding the Perfect Match

“Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in our hearts.” –Winnie the Pooh

With your little one on the way, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the task of creating room for your little one in your home and in your heart. You want to have the perfect nursery. After all, you’ll be spending quite a bit of time in there.

It’s important to, first, decide on a theme. Everything else will flow from there. The best place to start is with the bedding. Then you can decide which color and material you’d like to use for the crib and furniture.

Popular Themes for Boys:

From there, you should choose a crib. It has become extremely popular to choose a crib that can be easily converted into a toddler bed, and then to a regular-sized bed. This is a cost efficient way to update your child’s room as he or she grows. Once you have decided on the wood color or material you’d like to use, your next items to purchase should be the dresser, rocking chair, and changing table.

A few decorations should complete the look of your nursery. Consider waiting until after the baby shower to purchase decorations. Often, wall decor is a popular gift item for parents-to-be. Be sure to register for the things you’d like to have, and send invites in a similar theme to your nursery. This can help guide your friends and family to the right purchases.

No matter what you choose for your little one, it’s sure to be the perfect match. Making room in your home is the hard part. Making room in your heart will come naturally.

Summer Fun with Tots and Teens Together

Posted by on Jul 24, 2014 in General, New Mom on the Block, Toddler Tips | Comments Off on Summer Fun with Tots and Teens Together

African American Parents Boy Children Riding BikesSometimes it may seem like tots and teens are from completely different worlds, and the idea of them coexisting in peace nearly unattainable.  Rest assured, summer fun with tots and teens is definitely within grasp!  If done right (and smart) both age groups have a lot to offer and learn from each other.  Better yet, there is plenty of fun to be had right in the backyard without needing to spend much money.

Be physical!  Tots and teens typically have plenty of energy to burn.  With a few common household items, teens can set up a cool obstacle course that tots will love!  It is so good to keep kids active and moving.  Once the tots get worn out, the teens can have some fun adding in tougher maneuvers and more stations to take an obstacle course from beginner to advanced.

Get wet!  Who doesn’t love to cool off with refreshing water works in the summertime?  You really can’t go wrong with water play outside during hot weather.  Set up a sprinkler, and watch the tots and teens squeal in delight.

Chanel the inner artist.  Kids love sidewalk chalk.  Teens can draw big pictures for tots to color in.  It’s also fun to use sidewalk chalk to trace shadows every hour and watch how they change with the position of the sun.

Blow some bubbles!  Store bought bubbles are decent and cheap, but you can make your own for even less.  There are many different recipes online.  Some concoctions can make giant “tot encompassing” bubbles.

Get dirty!  Gardening is a fun and rewarding activity for people of all ages.  While letting your tot loose in the family vegetable garden may not be the best of decisions, letting your tot plant some pumpkin and sunflower seeds can be very educational and exciting. The teens can help with the weeding and watering, and once harvest comes, all can enjoy the fruits of their labor.  Teens may even want to try to grow a giant pumpkin (if space permits) and enter it into the local county fair.

Chill out!  There will be times when kids of any age need a break from the heat and decide to venture indoors.  Making popsicles can be fun and nutritious.  With teens running the blender and tots helping determine what goes in, you can have delicious and interesting flavored popsicles in no time.  Just poor the concoction into small paper cups, insert sticks halfway through freezing time, and then just chill.  Tots and teens will be more than happy relaxing in the shade and slurping their snack together!

Healthy Eating while Traveling With Kids

Posted by on Jul 17, 2014 in General, Travel | Comments Off on Healthy Eating while Traveling With Kids

eating health on vacation with kidsSchool is out for the summer for most families across the USA, so it’s summer vacation time!  Many families find themselves planning some sort of trip in the next couple of months.  Whether it’s transatlantic travels or a couple hours drive to a camping ground, traveling with kids can be a daunting experience!

You may feel overwhelmed as you sit there surrounded by half filled suitcases and backpacks filled with socks, underwear, and swim gear.  You may wonder if it’s all even worth it or if you should just let them loose with a sprinkler and some water guns in your back yard.  Don’t loose heart! You can do this!

One thing that often gets overlooked in vacation packing is healthy snacks.  This is something important to consider adding to your already long list for several reasons.

  • Healthy snacks will save you money.  Although fast food places provide quick and convenient snack and meal options, they are certainly not free.  Growing kids’ stomachs can seem to be bottomless pits, especially when they are bored!
  • It will save you time.  Having some healthy snacks packed will eliminate some, but certainly not all, of the pit stops along the way.
  • Finally, having some healthy snacks packed for your kids may just save you from some ugly unwanted behavior.  Kids like a routine, and part of that routine is food.  If kids are used to applesauce and yogurt as their snacks at home, and are suddenly plunged into a world of licorice and potato chips, you will see a change in their demeanor.  They will already be off schedule and excited from the travels, so to add one more variable could be catastrophic to their delicate moods, not to mention your well laid plans.

Vacation is meant to be special and fun.  Your kids will likely be less than impressed if all you pack is kale chips and plain rice cakes.  Try to find a balance.  Maybe pack a few special treats, but try to pack a majority of what they would typically eat at home.  A few ideas for healthy snacks that travel well are apples, grapes, bananas, carrot sticks, crackers, cheese sticks, granola bars, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  It’s ok to toss in a bag of jelly beans too for something special.  We can’t possibly plan everything when we pack, but sometimes the best memories are the ones we don’t even see coming!  Happy travels!
