Fit Pregnancy: Signs of Gestational Diabetes

Pregnancy fitness is a passion for those of us here at Baby’s Own Room. This week we are helping to spread awareness of gestational diabetes. We’ll be looking at 5 signs you can watch for in yourself or your favorite mom-to-be.

The tricky thing about gestational diabetes is the fact that many signs are similar to typical pregnancy symptoms. Unfortunately, many moms overlook things like nausea, fatigue, and frequent urination. Who hasn’t experienced one or all of these during pregnancy? I’ve heard that there are some lucky ducks out there, but for the most part we don’t get to avoid these rights of passage. Adding to the problem of early detection is that many moms suffering silently from gestational diabetes don’t have any symptoms at all!

The good news is that it’s treatable and once diagnosed, you and your healthcare providers can closely watch and care for you. If you have not been tested or diagnosed in your pregnancy, keep reading and have a chat with your Dr. as needed.

Due to the serious and potential complications, you’ll want to watch out for the following signs:

  • Nausea and vomiting ► For some women, nausea is a sign of gestational diabetes.
  • Increased thirst ► During pregnancy, you are drinking enough water for two, but remember that increased thirst is a common sign of diabetes.
  • Fatigue ► Low energy may also indicate that the body is not metabolizing sugar properly — another sign of diabetes.
  • Frequent infections ► For those with gestational diabetes, bladder infections may occur more frequently.
  • Increased urination ► Diabetes also affects how the kidneys work, so increased urination could be an indicator of gestational diabetes.

We’re not Dr.’s and this, by far, is not a complete list. It also is not to be used as a diagnostic tool. You can find more detailed information regarding Gestational Diabetes at the American Diabetes Association, ADA. Work closely with your caregiver and take care to have a fit pregnancy and healthy, happy baby. ~ Baby’s Own Room

We love comments. 🙂 Do you have an experience to share or more tips for one of our Moms? Sharing is caring and thanks!

Musical Crib Mobiles are a must in the nursery! And this pink & gray heart Cheetah pattern mobile is just what the modern nursery needs! Created by Sweet Jojo Designs this mobile includes frame, canopy with hanging toys and matching sleeve cover. It plays Brahms’s lullaby and fits standard cribs.

*Baby Tip: When your baby starts pushing up onto her hands and knees, (usually at around 4 to 5 months of age), it’s time to get rid of the mobile — she could reach it, and that’s dangerous.
