New Moms: Should I use Regular Soap for my Baby’s Items?

new mom woes

Being a new mother is a scary experience. Coming into the realization that you are completely responsible for the life and well-being of another living being can be both overwhelming and stressful. The most important thing for a new mom to realize is that being a bother is instinctual. Ultimately, you will know what is right and what is wrong for the safety and health of your child. You can gather all of the advice and research in the world, but it is important that the final choice in what you say or do for your child is yours. New moms can easily come to regret decisions they make, if they let other people make them.

It is fairly normal for new mothers to overlook simple things such as washing their baby’s clothing and bottles. Most medical experts will tell you that it is far more important to make sure you are washing your baby’s clothing in baby friendly laundry soap than worrying about the dish soap you are using on your child’s bottles. Dreft is actually the name of the number one choice by pediatricians for washing your baby’s laundry. This soap has the ability to remove all of the common baby stains including spit-up and urine. It has also been tested many times and determined to be completely safe for your baby’s sensitive skin. Once your baby is a few months old, you can transition to All Free and Clear which is also supposed to be for individuals with sensitive skin. When your baby four months and older, it is OK to slowly transition into the laundry detergent that you use for your clothing. You are going to want to wash a small amount of their clothing and make sure they do not break out before washing all of their clothing.

The use of dish soap is more about trial and error than anything. Most mothers find that they have no real issues washing their baby’s bottles with the dish soap they are presently using. Keep in mind, it is extremely important that you are boiling your baby’s bottles to sanitize them during their first few months of life. This is the best way to ensure that they are completely free of germs and safe for your baby to use.

Baby’s Own Room recommendation: Don’t stress too much, new babies can be scary. If you ever have a doubt, call your mom, step-mom grandma or a friend for advice.

Run for Their Lives! SIDS Awareness 5K 2013

Posted by on May 10, 2013 in General | Comments Off on Run for Their Lives! SIDS Awareness 5K 2013

The 5th Annual Run for Their Lives! SIDS Awareness 5k Run/Walk will have some new supporters. Baby’s Own Room will have proud runners supporting this family oriented event. We look forward enjoying some fresh air, celebrating Mother’s Day and supporting the fight against SIDS.

What is SIDS?

SIDS is an acronym for, Sudden infant death syndrome and is the leading cause of death in the United States for babies between the ages of one month to a year old. Scary stuff for new parents, however the best way to battle fear is to educate yourself and those around you. Below are some facts on this deadly killer of our precious babies.

  1. SIDS isn’t any one illness or disease. It’s the diagnosis given when a child under a year old dies suddenly and the exact cause is unknown. If you or anyone you know has lost a child to SIDS this diagnosis can be overwhelming as there is no answer and it can happen without warning which is devastating for families.
  2. Each year over 2,000 infants die from SIDS in the United States each year and most commonly affects babies between the ages of one and four month. 90% of all SIDS related deaths involve infants younger than six months.
  3. SIDS can occur anytime however it most commonly happens during sleep and usually between the hours of ten at night and ten in the morning, giving this deadly killer the nickname of crib death.
  4. If your infant is in daycare, it is important to know again that SIDS can happen anywhere even in daycare. So ask your daycare facility about their experience and knowledge regarding SIDS. Being well informed could save lives.
  5. Some experts believe that SIDS occurs when a baby has a fundamental susceptibility (such as immature or abnormal functioning. This could be in the baby’s heart, lungs or arousal. Also if you baby is exposed to certain stressors, such as sleeping tummy-down or on soft bedding during a critical period of development.

Whereas the exact cause of SIDS is unknown; there are some risk factors that have been identified, which include:

  • Born premature.
  • Very low birth weight.
  • Teen mom’s & mothers under the age of 20.
  • Having many siblings (particularly if they are close in age).
  • Babies who have suffered an apparent life-threatening event, i.e. stopped breathing, turned pale/blue and required resuscitation) have a higher risk of SIDS.

In support of those who has lost babies to SIDS and to help prevent future deaths caused by this silent killer.  Mother’s Day, May 12th
Baby’s Own Room will be showing our support and running our local 5k.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Mother’s Day: 2013

Posted by on May 8, 2013 in Holidays | Comments Off on Mother’s Day: 2013

Mother’s Day a day intended to recognize maternal bonds, motherhood, and mothers in general. It is a day to recognize the positive contributions that mothers have made for their community. Naturally, the traditions and origins for Mother’s Day celebrations tend to differ from one region to the next. However, most celebrations are influenced by a tradition that was established by woman named Anna Jarvis. The very first Mother’s Day was celebrated in 1908. After the celebration it was campaigned that it should be made into an official holiday.

Mother figures that should be honored on mother’s day may include: mothers, stepmoms, mother-in-laws, guardians, a mother-like relative, and grandmothers. There are tons of different ways a family can celebrate Mother’s Day. These ways include (but should not be limited to):

  • Giving greeting cards, flowers, or sweets
  • Hosting a family gathering
  • Hosting a family meal
  • Gifts such as: chocolate, clothing, jewelry, handmade items, or gift cards
  • A movie night

The first few years that a mother celebrates mother’s day, it is up to the father/significant other to set up the celebrations and pick out the gifts. It is not until your child is old enough to become more involved in helping picking out Mother’s Day gifts and deciding how to celebrate with and for their mother. To a mother, there is nothing more meaningful than that hearing your child say, “I love you.”

Mother’s Day does not have to be about fancy celebrations or expensive gifts. Mother’s Day is supposed to be when your children and your significant other tell you how much they love you, how much they need you, and how much they appreciate everything you do for them. Mother’s Day is supposed to be a day about reminding mothers just how important they are to their loved ones.

From all of us at Baby’s Own Room, Happy Mothers Day to all you wonderful mothers!
